City Launches Pilot Reuse Program at Kapa‘a Transfer Station

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV) is partnering with Re-use Hawai‘i and Goodwill Hawaii to launch a new reusable materials drop-off site at the Kapa‘a Transfer Station (100 Kapa‘a Quarry Rd., Kailua), beginning May 31, 2025.

In alignment with the city’s long-term sustainability and waste reduction strategies, the pilot program will operate on weekends for approximately six months, providing the public with an accessible option to donate reusable goods instead of simply disposing of them. The collection point will be open Saturdays and Sundays, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Accepted materials include, clothing and textiles; household goods and small appliances; mirrors, glass, windows, and doors; along with furniture, cabinetry, and usable building material.

“This reuse pilot is part of our department’s commitment to resource recovery and landfill diversion,” ENV Director Roger Babcock said. “We’re proud to partner with respected organizations like Re-use Hawai‘i and Goodwill Hawaii, who will ensure the materials collected are put to good use in our community.”

Re-use Hawai‘i and Goodwill Hawaii – two long-standing leaders in sustainable practices – will manage the collection and distribution of accepted items. Donations that meet each organization’s standards will be repurposed, resold, or redistributed to support local job training programs and green initiatives.

“This pilot project represents an exciting collaboration that makes it easier for residents to choose to recover resources,” said Quinn Vittum, Executive Director of Re-use Hawai‘i. “By partnering with Goodwill Hawaii and the City and County of Honolulu, we’re expanding access to donation options for the community right at the point of disposal. Together, we’re helping to keep valuable resources out of the landfill and support the circular economy.”

Residents are encouraged to participate by bringing acceptable, clean, gently used items directly to the designated reuse collection area at the Kapa‘a Transfer Station on weekends during the program’s duration from May 31 and into late November.
